Description

The monument is located in Novosilka Village, on the killing site, which is surrounded by a stone fence with a metal gate decorated by a Magen David. The monument itself is a boulder with a black granite rectangular slab, attached to a boulder in front of the gate. The slab bears Hebrew and Ukrainian inscriptions and a Magen David above them. A concrete pavement leads from the gate to the monument. The monument is surrounded by several Jewish tombstones, which probably were collected around the Skalat and installed here.

History/Provenance

According to the Tsal Kaplun Foundation, there was a labor camp in Novosilka Village. Jews were sent there from Skalat to work in a quarry. On July 28, 1943, about 100 Jews were killed in the village.

The monument was erected in 1993. It was included on The List of Monuments of History of Local Significance by Order no. 209 of the Head of the Ternopil Region State Administration on May 26, 1997 ["Ternopilska oblast..."].

According to the information board near the monument, the memorial site was included in a tourist route around Skalat, created with the financial support of the United States Agency for International Development (USAID).
