Jewish Funerary Art Site of the Jewish cemetery in Szczecinek, Poland
According to ESJF European Jewish Cemeteries Initiative, the Jewish cemetery was probably established in Szczecinek in the first half of the 18th century, because at that time a gravedigger worked here, although the community was not numerous – it consisted of about 30 people. The Jewish cemetery was established in the northern part of the city, on the St. Jürgensberg (in the vicinity of today’s Wodociągowa Street). The necropolis occupied about 0.25 ha.
There is a preserved former beit-tahara building, currently used as a small chapel of the Evangelical-Augsburg church. The territory is only marked with a sign saying "Former cemetery grounds. Please keep order."
The cemetery is located on Wodociągowa Street at the intersection with Szafera Street, next to the small Evangelical-Augsburg Church (the former beit-tahara of the cemetery), opposite an apartment block at 3, Wodociągowa Street. From the south, the Jewish cemetery is adjacent to the burial place of 119 Napoleonic soldiers from 1812-13 (commemorated with a monument and information boards). The Jewish necropolis is fully accessible, and the area is not fenced (except for the former beit-tahara building). This place, where the Jewish cemetery was located, is also called Wzgórze Św. Jerzego (the St. Jerzy Hill). The former beit-tahara located in the cemetery area has its own cadastral parcel no. 321501_1.0013.93
