Jewish Funerary Art Jewish cemetery in Lidzbark Welski, Poland
According to ESJF European Jewish Cemeteries Initiative, the Jewish cemetery of Lidzbark Welski is situated in the southern part of the town. The area is partially destroyed. The central part of the cemetery area is a meadow, covered with wild grasses. Above-ground heating pipes were run through the cemetery area. The northern and western borders of the cemetery area are marked by the fencing that belongs to private properties adjacent to the cemetery.
ESJF team has found 33 graves remains, mostly concrete frames and pedestals. There was also one sarcophagus
ESJF team members talked to a man who lived right next to the cemetery and tried to guard the necropolis on his own. He said that the cemetery was a place of frequent alcohol parties and that he often called the police for it. He complained that eggs were being thrown at his house in revenge. The man also said that human bones were unearthed during the widening of Kraziewicza Street and when working on the heat pipelines. He does not know what was done with them afterward, but he was indignant that the place of Jewish burials was treated this way.
The cemetery is located at the corner of Zieluńska and Kraziewicza Streets. Western border of the cemetery adjoins private residential house on Kraziewicza, 2.
