Jewish Funerary Art Site of the New Jewish cemetery in Lubawa, Poland
According to ESJF European Jewish Cemeteries Initiative, the New jewish cemetery of Lubawa is situated in the eastern part of the town. The cemetery was demolished. Currently, it is overbuilt with single-family houses. No traces of the cemetery preserved, no tombstones preserved.
Perimeter length: 285 metres
According to Seweryn Szczepański, Jews from Lubawa used the (old) cemetery near Fijewo in the 18th century. The new cemetery was established on a plot of 0.15 ha and 25 sq m at the then Gilgenburger Chaussee (today's Kupnera Street), purchased on April 27, 1860 for a total of 300 marks.
In 1869, the area of the cemetery was further expanded and with time it was surrounded by a new metal fence. There were tombstones with beautiful tombstones with Hebrew and German inscriptions. The cemetery ended with the entry of German troops into Polish Lubawa in September 1939. The last burial took place that year. On the order of the German authorities, the tombstones were removed and the surface of the cemetery was plowed, all traces of it were erased. After 1945, this area was gradually put under construction. Currently, no trace of its existence has survived, because residential houses were built in this place.
