Jewish Architecture Synagogue in Chernivtsi (Chernevtsy) - Drawings
To the main object: Synagogue in Chernivtsi (Chernevtsy), Ukraine
A rhomboidal building in a relatively urban setting, the Chernevtsy synagogue retains little that reflects its origins as a synagogue. Currently it is used as a residential structure. The single story building has windows on three of its four sides: the northwestern side currently has no fenestration but that may be due to Soviet-era alterations. The northeastern facade, with what appears to have been the original entrance (based on the sympathetic form) has four windows, the easternmost of which is currently blocked. The southwestern facade has had an additional doorway inserted towards the southeastern wall, now used as the main entrance. The windows, 3x2 with round heads, are seemingly original. The internal organization of the building is intriguing. The space is divided northeast-southwest by what appears to be a bearing wall, which in some way was perhaps utilized as a divider for the women’s section - possibly having been perforated.
