© Center for Jewish Art, Photographer: Levin, Vladimir, 2019

Who is Commemorated?

Victims of the Holocaust

Description

The monument is set in the middle of the New Jewish Cemetery, in row with other graves. It is an obelisk-like concrete structure, which bears three marble plaques. The upper one is round, with a Magen David and the letters pai nun (traditional beginning of epitaphs, meaning here is buried) inscribed in the center. The larger rectangular plaque is inscribed in Hebrew and Romanian in memory of the victims. A smaller plaque on the pedestal bears the names of the donors.

Inscriptions

The Maden David is inscribed with Hebrew letters פנ, an abbreviation standing for פה נטמן or פה נקבר, i.e. "here is buried."

ת.נ.צ.ב.ה. [=תהי נפשם צרורה בצרור החיים]

Translation: In memory of the souls of the holy that were killed in the time of the Shoah, 1941-1944. Here is buried the soap made of their bodies by Fascist killers. May their souls be bound in the bundle of life.

The inscription in Romanian reads:

In amintirea sufletelor

prigoanei anilor 1941-1944
Aici este ingropat sapunul
facut din trupurile lor
de catre ucigasii Fascisti
