  Torah mantle, Jerusalem, 1913

© Gross Family Collection, Photographer: Bar Hama, Ardon, -

The following description was prepared by William Gross:

This Torah mantle, or "Meil", was beautifully embroiderd on a dark colored velvet material, apparently in Eretz Israel in the first part of the 20th century.  The depicted crown, vegetal decoration and inscriptions are all applied in a tightly embroidered gold colored metalic thread. The dedicatory inscription is presented in the form of a long ribbon or banner at the bottom. Central to the design is an extremely charming and attractive embroidery of the Western Wall and Temple mount, applied in multi-colored silk thread.

Inscription:

This Sefer Torah was written in the Holy City [Jerusalem] the affluent and honorable Rav Menachem, son of Reb Eliezer, of blessed memory, that passed away of the 22 of Teveth, [5]673  {=1913}. At the expense of his son. / Yerushalayim T"V /           Keter Torah   /  Har ha-Bayit
