Sacred and Ritual Objects Seal Ring of Ozer son of Moshe, Ukraine, circa1850
The following description was prepared by William Gross:
A seal is a device for making an impression in wax, clay, paper, or some other medium, including an embossment on paper, and is also the impression thus made. The original purpose was to authenticate a document, a wrapper for one such as a modern envelope, or the cover of a container or package holding valuables or other objects. They have been used for two thousand years, also by Jews.
Many Jews in Europe had personal seals for stamping documents or sealing communications. For wealthy people they were sometimes made from expensive materials, with a fine engraved stone set into a ring. But most were simple seals from a cast matrix with the personal signe and details engraved into it. Such is this seal found in the Ukraine, belonging to one Ozer ben Moshe.
Inscription: Ozer ben Moshe
