  Torah case (Iraq, 1935)

The Torah case is made of wood and consists of a body and a crown.## The body is cylindrical and covered by blue velvet. Silver friezes frame the upper and the lower edges and bear a dedicatory inscription.A lily sheped crenellation with red plastic beads encircles the upper border. The case is closed by two pairs of hook clasps. The inner face of the case is covered with cotton decorated with floral pattern. The onion shaped crown is composed of a main section, a crest,and an apex. The main section is covered with blue velvet. The silver crest is undulating and consists of a conical lower part and a globular upper part. Five chains with drop shape bells are attached to the globular section. It is surmounted by a bud like apex. The crest is decorated with vertical bands which bear a floral pattern and blanck bands intermittently. Two rimon mounts are fixed on the top of the case.## The inner face of the crown is covered by a white paper covered by glass. It bears two inscriptions which are framed with apointed arches.They are flancked by two floral motives. The inscriptions are written in black filled letters.## the inscription in the right reads: " וזאת ## התורה אשר ## שם משה לפני ## בני ישראל ## אלה העדות החק')החוקים(##והמשפט' )והמשפטים( והתו' )והתורה(## Deut 4:44 and part of Deut 4:45 follwed by "This Torah" The dedicatory inscription, on the left reads: "תיק##זה וספר תורה##שבו למנו' )למנוחת( המ' )המנוח( ##אליהו יעקב##נע)נוחו עדן(## נפ')נפטר( טו' סיון## שנת תרצה' " This Torah case and the Torah scroll inside it, for the repose of the latest Elija Jacob.May he rest in Eden.Passed away at 15 Sivan the year (5)695($$15.6.1935)." The dedicatory inscriptions on the upper and the lower friezes start from the left of the body.It is repousse' in outline letter against punched background.The upper inscription reads: " תיק זה וספר תורה שבו למנוחת המרוחם אליהו יעקב תנצבה' נפ' יום טו' סיון תרצ"ה " "This Torah case and the Torah scroll inside it for the repose of pitied Elija Jacob may his soul be bound up in the bond of life.Passed away at the 15 of Sivan (5)695($$15.6.1935). The lower inscription reads: " על מנת בכל מקום שירצו בעלי הס"ת )הספר תורה( להוציא ולהניחו למקומות אחרים הרשות בידם ובכ )כל זמן(" " For anywhere that the owners of the Torah scroll want to take it out and transfer it to other places,the permission is in their hands any time."
