Jewish Architecture Synagogue in Meerssen, The Netherlands
The synagogue was designed by the architect J. L. Lemmens in a Neo-Classical style and was constructed between 1851 and 1853. The building is located beyond the residence situated along the street. The roof is topped with a small turret. The building is designed with a semicircular apse at the western end and forms the main entrance of the synagogue. The U-shaped women’s gallery is located on the same side, positioned above the vestibule. The Torah ark is placed underneath a large stained-glass window at the opposite end of the building. The bimah is positioned at the center of the assembly hall. The frieze above the entrance door contains the Hebrew inscription of Psalm 96:9.
The building was sold in 1946 after which the benches and the bimah were moved to the Synagogue in Maastricht. The building was heavily damaged by fire in 1977 and was subsequently renovated by the architect P. L. M. Schuffelers in 1987/88. It is currently used by the Stichting Leerhuis Limburg.
