Jewish Architecture
  Synagogue in Heerlen, The Netherlands

© Pa3ems, via Reliwiki.nl, Photographer: Unknown, July 16, 2013

The site of an old cemetery (1811-1898) was used as the building plot for this synagogue. The building was therefore built on a concrete platform in order to keep the graves intact. The brick synagogue, located behind the buildings of the Stationstraat, contains a relatively high gable roof. The Torah ark in the prayer hall of the synagogue was adorned with a pointed arched frame made out of brick and natural stone. In 1959, the building was renovated and it continued to function as a synagogue until 1985, after which it was abandoned due to the dissolution of the Jewish community of Heerlen.

An adjacent building which contained the mikveh was demolished in 1991.
