First Synagogue in Haarlem, The Netherlands

© Rudolphous, via Reliwiki.nl, Photographer: Unknown, September 25, 2010

The synagogue was located on the first floor of this private residence and dates back to 1765. The main floor of the building originally contained a mikveh. In 1809, the synagogue was expanded. As the Jewish community of Haarlem increased in size, a new Neogothic synagogue was constructed along the Lange Begijnestraat in 1841. The original building continued to function as the place for ritual bathing and functioned as a Jewish school until 1857. The building has subsequently been redeveloped as a private residence.

The former synagogue is still recognizable by the building expansion of the eastern wall which originally housed the Torah ark.
