Jewish Architecture
  Synagogue in Bredevoort, The Netherlands

© By Arch (Own work) [Public domain], via Wikimedia Commons, Photographer: Unknown, 2009

A previous house shul can be dated back to circa 1700. A proper synagogue was used since 1810 which had to be demolished because of structural deterioration. A new synagogue was therefore created on the same location which was consecrated in 1863. The building was designed in a Neo-Renaissance style manner and included a hipped roof and brick ornamental details. The front façade dates back to 1895. The Jewish community of Bredevoort slowly decreased in size and ultimately dissolved and merged with Aalten in the year 1900. The building underwent several renovations. An original rounded arched window of the former synagogue can still be found on the interior of the building.
