  Torah case wrapper, Libya, 1900-1950?

© Center for Jewish Art, Photographer: Unknown,
The rectangular Torah case wrapper is made of cotton velvet. ##It is divided horizontally into three sections, the central one being narrower than the two side sections. The central section bears a vase and flowers surmounted by a dedicatory inscription, all within a pointed horseshoe arch, which itself is within a larger arch. The two side sections are each decorated with a floral pattern within an oval medallion. The three sections are divided by silk brocade bands with crescent, pentacle, and hamsa patterns. A wider band, bearing the same pattern, surrounds the entire cloth. Eleven loops are sewn to the wrapper's upper border. A thin braided ribbon from which hangs a fringe is attached to the bottom and the bottom of the sides of the cloth. The dedicatory inscription in the center of the cloth is couched in filled-in letters, reads horizontally, and reads: !לע!נ##כלאפו רקח##נ!ע! !For the exaltation of the soul of (in initials)##Klafo Rakah##May he rest in Eden (in initials)!
