The initial word “Av” (father) which opens a prayer from the Memorial Service, is written in bold square Ashkenazi script in dark brown ink. The initial word is set within a rectangular panel which is divided into two compartments shaped in a step form. The panel is decorated with delicate penwork scrolls enclosing palmette motifs in spared ground technique. The right compartment, which includes the letter “aleph”, is in red while the left compartment, which includes the letter “beth” is in green. The letters are outlined in a red line. Tendrils extend from all sides of the panel and into the inner margin. From the left side of the panel, among the tendrils, extends a small grotesque with a protruding tongue.
