Sacred and Ritual Objects Torah case, Iraq, 1913
The wooden torah^case consists of a body and a crown.## The body is cylindrical and was covered with blue velvet. It is decorated with nails which forms eight squares and bears a geometric pattern. A geometric crenellation encircles the upper border. It is decorated with foliate pattern. The case is closed by two pairs of metal hook clasps.## Two pairs of metal hinges are on the back of the case. The inner face is plain wood. There are two insert holes for the rods. An undulating crest is mounted over the crown and is decorated with nails.## Two wooden rimon mounts are fixed on the crown. ## The inner face bears is covered by a plastic. A paper bearing a dedicatory inscription is inserted behind the plastic. It is written in an arch-like frame and two lines of flowers depict its edges.##The inner face of the crest is covered by leather. The dedicatory inscription in the inner face of the crown is written in blue outline letters, and reads from the right: וזאת##התורה אשר##שם משה לפני##בני ישראל אלה##העד' )העדות( והחק' )והחוקים( והמ' )והמשופתים(## תיק זה סת' שבו Deut. 4:44##followed by: !This are the testimonies (int.), and the statutes (int.) and the judgments (int.) Deut. 4:45!## this case and the torah scroll inside it ## Continues on the left side of the crown: עשאו## הר' יוסף שמואל ## כהן היו' )ה' יחיהו ויזכהו( למנו') למנוחת(##אביו המ' )המולא( הזקן## שמואל יהודה## כהן נע' )נוחו עדן( ש' )שנת( תרעג !Has been made ## by rabbi Joseph Shmuel## Cohen, may the Lord sustain him and grant him favour (int.), for the repose (int.),## of his father, the old Mullah (int.) !
