Žydų žudnių veta ir kapai

Ši vieta liudija Anykščių žydų bendruomenės tragišką lemtį XX a. viduryje.

nacionalinio lygmens istorinis memorialinis paminklas, atnaujintas prisimenant Holokausto
80-metį.

English:

Site of Execution of  Jewish people
and Holocaust Graves

this site witnessed the tragic fate of the Jewish community of Anykščiai in the middle of the
20th century. Here, at this sandy foot of the Liudiškiai Hill, withing a short distance from the town in
the summer of 1941, between July and September , around 1,500 residents of Anykščiai were killed
and buried in mass graves.

The exact number of the Holocaust victims is unknown to this day. However, without the
slightest doubt about the precise site of the killings, we are only aware of the part of the names of the
Anykščiai residents interred here. Thus, this forest has become and will always remain
the final resting place of the majority of the Jewish community of Anykščiai of the 20th century.

In the Soviet Lithuania, this place was marked with the stone monument as the mass killing
and burial site of Soviet citizens. Since 1993 the site has been protected and administered as a
historical monument of national importance of the Republic of Lithuania. The monument was last
renovated on commemorating the 80th anniversary of the Holocaust.

Commissioned by:

Lithuanian Soviet Socialist Republic (1950s), Lithuanian Jewish Community (1993)

History/Provenance

At the end of June (around the 28th), 1941, Jewish men were separated from women and children, tortured and shot. On August 29, 1941, Jewish women, children and the elderly from Anykščiai were shot at the base of Liudiškiai mound. In total around 1,500 people were shot. Over 20 members of the Anykščiai white armband unit shot them.

The date of installation of the monument is unknown, probably in the 1950s. A new inscription was placed by the Jewish Community of Lithuania in 1993. Information stand with the indentical text in Lithuanian and English was erected in 2021.

On February 9, 1993, the monument was registered in the State Cultural Register of the Republic of Lithuania as a site of national importance (no. 10806).
