Sacred and Ritual Objects  Charity Container of Kolel Raysn, Jerusalem, circa 1920

Charity is a major value within the Jewish Community and alms boxes to collect money for various ends were a regualr and normal part of Jewish life, both at home and at communal events. Several such vessels are in the Gross Family Collection both antique and modern. But this is the only textile for collection purposes in the collection. It is a small cotton bag with draw-string for collecting coins for the "Reissin Kollel", a Hassidic group in Tiberius. This was probably distributed to the members of the Kollel for their homes in which small coins were collected as the person was able. Then it would be given to the institution.
