Modern Jewish Art Bezalel Work, Jerusalem, circa 1915
The following description was prepared by William Gross:
During the First World War and its aftermath, the Bezalel School had difficulties in securing brass raw materials. The staff began to collect the casings from artillery shells that had been used in battles in the Holy Land and making objects from them. This is one of the finer examples of that secondary use, and includes the techniques of damascene and acid etching.
