Jewish Architecture Hagdolah Synagogue in Djerba, Tunisia
The synagogue compound is part of a defined area surrounded by a wall (see: main photograph), and includes a synagogue complex, a ritual bath (mikveh), a public oven, a well and a cemetery (fig. 1; Remarks: no. 1). The compound is reached from the west through a main entrance (figs. 1, 2), while additional entries are on the south, leading to the oven and to the mikveh (see: main photograph).
The cemetery is situated on the west side and in the early 1900s it was expanded to the north and was separated by a wall stretching from west to east, perpendicular to the façade of the synagogue complex (figs. 1, 2).
Over the years, the compound was extended; a rectangular storage room was added on the eastern side while other structures were built to the south of the synagogue.
