Holocaust memorial in Zhytomyr (Zhitomir), Ukraine, 1996

© Josef Tabachnyk, Photographer: Tabachnyk, Josef,

At the base of the monument a granite plaque (1.5 x 0.65m) with the inscription is laid. The inscription in Ukrainian reads:

"Ця багатостраждальна земля свідок жорстокої страти німецькими фашистами десятків тисяч військовополонених та мирних громадян Житомира в 1941 — 1943 рр. Вічна пам'ять загиблим."

The inscription might be translated in English as follows: “This earth, which has seen much suffering, is a witness of the cruelty of the fascist destruction of tens of thousands of prisoners of war and peaceful citizens of Zhytomyr from 1941 to 1943. In eternal memory of the deceased.”
