Livyat Hen, Boaz (לוית חן, ספר בועז; Ornament of Grace, The Book of Boaz) by Levi ben Abraham ben Hayyim (fols. 1-155v): beginsהמאמר השישי מן הספר הכולל המכונה לוית חן והוא המאמר מן העמוד השני הנקרא בועז (Sirat 1963:167-169). 2. Sha'arei Zedek (שערי צדק; The Gates of Righteousness) by Joseph ben Abraham Gikatilla (fols. 158-245v): begins סמני שערי צדק. שערי צדק א' דור הפלגה ב' סוד ישמעאל ג' סוד יעקב. Another copy in Munich: BSB Cod.hebr. 248 (fols. 16-153v), belonged to Johann Albrecht Widmanstetter (this manuscript served as a textual exemplar for Vatican ebr. 205). 1st ed. Commentary on Ma'arekhet Ha-Elohut (פירוש מערכת האלוהות; Commentary on the Order of God) attributed to Reuben Ha-Zarfati (fols. 246-314v): beginsאמונה מוחלטת פירוש שלא יהיה מחשבת האדם (Gottlieb 1976). 1st ed. Ferrara 1557. 4. Gan Naul (גן נעול; The Locked Garden) by Abraham ben Samuel Abulafia (fols. 316-340): beginsבראש הוא אומר תקרא בפתח (Idel 1976, I:19-20, 50 n. 117). 5. Iggeret Purim: Commentary on the ten Sefirot ((אגרת פורים: פירוש עשר ספירות with commentary by Reuben Ha-Zarfati (fols. 342-387): beginsמגדל עוז שם ה' בו ירוץ צדיק ונשגב/ יהי לבי תמים בחקיך למען לא אבוש ... ונהר יוצא מערן להשקות את הגן ומשם יפרד והיה לארבעה ראשים (Scholem 1933/34:502, 504). Yaakov ben Yosef (Scribe C): fols. 158-245v in brown ink. Scribe 8** (Scribe D): fols. 342-386 in brown ink. Binding

Dark green leather on wooden boards (352 x235 mm); gold-tooled with a central roundel on the front and a shield on the back cover within an undulating lozenge in a large rectangle, decorated with floral motifs at the centre of each side and at the corners. The front roundel is inscribed פירושים with שערי צדק above it and the letters CCC below. The spine, blind-tooled with hatching, has four hidden cords and head and tail bands. On the edges of the front cover are vestiges of four groups of three plaited leather bands, two on the side and one each on the upper and lower edges, with corresponding holes for four nails on the edges of the back cover (for preserved bands see Cod.hebr. 301). Each group of three bands terminated in a ring intended to hook over the nails in the opposite cover. The leaves are gilt-edged.

 

This binding was made for Fugger by the 'Fugger Binder' in Venice(Hobson 1999:119-129). Similar bindings in BSB: e.g. Cod.hebr. 18, 63 and 20 A. hebr. 99.

 

Watermark of the front flyleaf: An anchor within a circle with a star on top at the centre of the folio

(65 mm): similar to Harlfinger 1974-80, Ancre 24-31 (Venice, 1556). 

Decoration Program

The decoration is by Meir and Yishai ben Yehiel:

  1. Fol. 1: The title ספר בועז is written in ribbon-like letters by Meir.
  2. Fol. 14v: Decorative interlace as a filler for a lower line by Yishai ben Yehiel.
  3. Fol. 246: The title פירוש על מערכת האלהות is written in letters decorated with different patterns, animals and human figures by Yishai ben Yehiel.
