The following description was prepared by William Gross:
This is the title page of a Pinkas (protocol book) from the holy society of the Talmud Torah of the Portuguese community of Amsterdam. The page is beautifully drawn, with an arch surmounted by to trumpet holding angels. At the bottom is a scene of the "Akedat Yitzhak", the sacrifice of Isaac, a loose interpretation of the Christian model of the "Akedah", in which the son is kneeling, representing the figure of Christ, in a later sacrifice. It is interesting to note that even at this late date, some 150 years after the beginning of the Sephardic Jewish community in Amsterdam by way of Marannos fleeing from Spain and Portugal, the community still uses the Portuguese language.
