The violet reader's desk cover is made of silk velvet. It is composed of two pieces, one for the front and the other one for the back. The upper border is straight and the lower border is in the shape of an arch. An inscription in a wreath appears at the centre of the cover and reads :

שמעו מוסר / וחכמו

Translation: Hear instruction, and be wise (based on Prov. 8:33)"

A dedicatory inscription appears around the lower border. Ribbons encircle the lower border. Three fringes hang from the cover's border. The dedicatory inscription is embroidered in outline letters and reads:

ז"נ [=זאת נידב] לכבוד דברי תורה כה' [=כבוד הרב] אשר קאהן כ"ץ ע"ז [=עם זוגתו] מ' אסתר בעהם תי' [=תחיה]

Translation: This was donated(int.), for the honour of the Torah's words, by the honourable Rabbi (int.) Asher Kahan Katz with his wife (int.) Mrs. Esther Behm, may she live (int.)" On the back of the cover the date is embroidered: ת'ר'ס'ג' "(5)663=(1903)"
