This beautiful binding of gold tooled red leather with silver clasps is one of the finest such examples of Jewish use in the 18th century. The book is used for the Italian custom of "Mismara," the guarding of the child with prayers, Mizmorim the reading of the Zohar and food and drink. The elegant binding belongs to a class of extremely fine workmanship of the period, resembling some of the finer work done in Rome. This type of binding was expensive and is evidence that the Gallichi family of 18th century Sienna was a wealthy family. In fact, the Gallichi family financed the construction of the new synagogue in Sienna, started in 1756 and inaugurated in 1786.
