Who is Commemorated?

52 Jewish children deported from Sfântu Gheorghe in 1944.

Description:

The memorial is placed at the far end of the Jewish cemetery. A paved pathway leads to a high white stele that bears the Star od David and the Hebrew acronym ז"ל (of Blessed memory). On the prismatic base of the stele, the are three granite plaques. The plaque at the front bears dedications in Romanian, Hungarian, and Hebrew, while two plaques on the sides list the sponsors of the memorial in Romanian and Hungarian. There are benches along the pathway and in a circle surrounding the stele. Around the monument, 52 cypress trees were planted, each bearing the name of a deported child.

Translation: In memory of the 52 Jewish children from Sf. Gheorghe, deported in 1944 [who were] turned into ashes by the Nazis

In Hungarian:

Annak az 52 sepsiszentgyörgyi zsidó gyerekembereknek
emlókére, akikot 1944-ben e väro bol deportáltak,
s valamennyiüket a gyilkos eszmek, hamuva őröltek.

Translation: In memory of the 52 Jewish children of Sepsiszentgyörgy [Sfântu Gheorghe] who were deported from this town in 1944, and all of them were ground to ashes by murderous ideas

In Hebrew:

לזכר אותם חמישים ושניים הילדים היהודיים שגורשו מהעיר ב-1944
אשר נטחנו לאפר [עפר?] ואפר עד האחרון שבהם בשם האידאולוגיה
הנאצית הרצחנית.

Translation: In memory of those fifty-two Jewish children that were deported from the town in 1944, who were ground to ashes until the last one of them in the name of the Nazi murderous ideology.

Translation: Holocaust Memorial Park. It was made on the INITIATIVE of the survivors of the former Jewish Community from Trei Scaune county, with the material and moral support of the town hall of Sfântu Gheorghe, the Federation of Jewish Communities of Romania, the Jewish community of Braşov – the Jewish congregation of Sfântu Gheorghe in commemoration of 70 years from the tragic events. May 2014.

Translation: Holocaust Memorial Park. On the initiative of the surviving members of the former Jewish Community of Háromszék [Trei Scaune]; the town hall of Sepsiszentgyörgy [Sfântu Gheorghe], the Federation of Jewish Communities of Romania, the Jewish community of Brassó [Braşov] and the Jewish congregation of Sepsiszentgyörgy [provided] financial and moral support for commemoration of the 70th anniversary of the tragic events in May 2014.
