The following description was prepared by William Gross:

Silver cups engraved with symbolic animals, both real and legendary, were often used for blessing the wine on Shabbat and Holidays. This example is engraved with a pair of rampant griffins on each side of a medallion inscribed with the Biblical commandment to "Remember the Shabbat and keep it Holy".

Inscription:  Remember the Sabbath Day, to  Keep it Holy (Ex.  20:8)
