  torah case, Israel/Eretz Israel, 1922

© Center for Jewish Art, Photographer: Radovan, Zev, 1989

The wooden torah^case consists of a body and a crown.

The cylindrical body is covered with green velvet. Silver bands encircle the centre and the upper and lower borders of the body. The upper band bears a dedicatory inscription while the others are decorated with foliate pattern and volutes framed by baeds. Two cartouche-shaped silver plaques are attached to each quarter of the body. The plaques are decorated by a vase with flowers.##The body's upper border is surmounted by a lily-like crenellation.

The case is fastened by two silver hook clasps. The inner face of the case is covered by red cotton with a green and white geometrical pattern. There are two round holes for the rods. The onion shaped crown is composed of a main section, a crest and an apex.##The main section is covered with green velvet to which four silver plaques, similar to those on the body, are attached. An undulating crest mounted over the crown, ends in a bud-shaped apex. The crest is covered with silver plaques decorated at the bottom with vertical bands, every other one bearing a foliate pattern. A large ring in the middle bears two rows of rhombuses with a floral pattern above them. Eight chains hang around the centre of the crest carrying slit, drop-shaped bells.##Two iron rimon mounts are attached to the crown's sides.

The inner face of the crown is covered by mirrors, bearing a dedicatory inscription. Two lines of flowers depict their edges. The dedicatory inscription on the body starts at the upper border. It is repousse in outline letters against a punched background, and reads:

תיק זה וסת' )וםפר תורה( שבו הקדיש האשה נכ' )נקיית כפיים( זליכה % בת דרויש אשת עזרה נ' בן אגאי ובתה סלטנה !

This case and the Torah scroll (int.) inside it, were dedicated by the innocent (int.) woman Zalika % daughter of Darwish wife of Ezra son of (int.) Agai and her daughter Saltana!

The dedicatory inscription upon the inner face of the crown is written in green filled letters under the Tables^of^the^Covenant which are inscribed with the first words of the Decalogue. Above them, within a triangle, the following word appears: יהוה !Lord!

The dedicatory inscription begins on the right reading:

זה התיק וםת )וםפר תורה( שבו## הקדישה הג' )הגברת( זליכא !

This case and the Torah scroll (int.) inside it ## were dedicated by the woman (int.) Zalika!

בת דרויש אשת עזרא בן אגאי## כ!ב חודש תשרי שנת תר!פב לפ!ק !

Daughter of Darwish wife of Ezra son of Agai## the 22nd of the month of Tishrei, the year (5)682=(12.10.1922)!

The gabai claims that the Torah case was made in Israel.
