 The synagogue in Karlovac

Description:

A plaque of black stone is attached to the building that stands on the site of the Karlovac synagogue. 

It features an image of the synagogue and identical inscriptions in Croatian, Hebrew, and English. The inscriptions do not mention the Holocaust.

Croatian:

Na ovome se mjestu
nalazila sinagoga
židovske općine
Karlovac 1871 – 1960.

Translation: In this place was located the synagogue of the Jewish community of Karlovac, 1871 – 1960.

Hebrew:

כאן שכן בית הכנסת של קהילת יהודי קרלובץ
1960 – 1871

Translation: Here was the synagogue of the Jewish community of Karlovac, 1871 – 1960.

English:

The plaque was unveiled on September 13, 2021, in the presence of the Israeli Ambassador to Croatia, the chief rabbi Moše Prelević, the head of the Zagreb Jewish community Ognjen Kraus, the mayor of Karlovac Damir Mandić, the County Prefect Martina Furdek Hajdin, the founder of the association “Jews in Karlovac,” Tena Bunčić, and others.
