  Jewish cemetery in Krekenava, Lithuania

© ESJF European Jewish Cemeteries Initiative, Photographer: ESJF European Jewish Cemeteries Initiative, 2020

According to ESJF European Jewish Cemeteries Initiative, the Jewish cemetery is partially preserved: there are 84 tombstones of different shapes and forms, made from concrete or hewn granite. Several gravestones are inscribed in Hebrew.
In 1991 the cemetery was being encroached upon by local farms and was fenced. A monument has been erected there in memory of the Jewish population. On the new metal gate there is the inscription in Lithuanian – “The Jewish Cemetery of Krekenava.” Inside, a monument was erected with the following inscription in Yiddish, Hebrew, and Lithuanian – “The Old Cemetery. May the Deceased be Remembered Forever.” There is a 1m metal mesh fence on 3 sides only. The fence is cut off by the back of No.10 Tilto street. The existing fence surrounds a smaller area than the historical area of the cemetery.

Date of oldest tombstone: 1882
Date of newest tombstone: 1937
Perimeter length: 430 metres
