Sacred and Ritual Objects Tallit Holder, Algeria, 1936
The following description was prepared by William Gross:
A most unusual rendition of the Algerian Tallit Bag, for which there is a marvelous parallel textile example in the Gross Family Collection, 018.013. . While textile examples are fairly well known, such silver objects lined with silk are much rarer. The only other recorded example is in the Israel Museum in their permanent exhibition, almost surely made by the same hand three years after this one. The large size and volume occupied by the case create a quite monumental impression. The front contains the same design as the typical Algerian Mezuzah cover, being the Menorah and the Temple implements as well as the owner's name in Hebrew letters. On the other side are Latin letter initials, presumably also the owner's name, although apparently, his Latin name was different than his Hebrew first name, David. On both sides in a hamsa.
