Fol. 1v: In the upper part of the page, a large panel of gold-brush and red background contains two smaller panels, set one below the other. The upper small panel encloses the title opening the section of the prayer for New Year (עניין ראש השנה), written in display square script, while the lower one encloses the subtitle “Ma’ariv for New Year” מעריב של ראש השנה, written in semi-cursive Italian script. The large panel is filled with scrolls in spared-ground technique; each curl of the scrolls encloses a foliate motif, mostly of trifoliate leaves. The panel is outlined with a running strung beads-and-circlets motif, and delicate red flourishes extend from the middle of both sides of the panel. The flourishes on the left extend along the outer margin and are decorated with bud and pearl motifs. A stylized floral motif is drawn in this part of the margin, next to the panel, in darker red ink. Below the frame are three simple red panels for the opening words of the main passages of the prayer, written in large bold square letters. The panels are decorated with a few stylized buds. Similar motifs of simple red lines decorated with buds emphasize some words within the text.
