Obj. ID: 20885 Great Synagogue in Gorlice, Poland
The Great Gynagogue in Gorlice (Piekarska Street 3)- the building to be originally located at this site was a wooden synagogue erected either towards the end of the XVIII-th or at the beginning of the XIX-th century. The synagogue burnt down during the city’s fire of 1874 and was eventually rebuilt, however its interior and paintwork decorations were changed. Also this building was destroyed in 1915 during World War I. (Text from Virtual Shtetl)
The interior was painted by Chućko- a house painter of Polish descent. During World War II, the interior of the synagogue was devastated by the Nazis, who turned the building into a barn. After the war, it was used as a storehouse. In 1967, it was adapted for a bakery, which has been functioning up till nowadays.
