Obj. ID: 6724  Hanukkah lamp, Italy

© U. Nahon Museum of Italian Jewish Art, Photographer: Unknown, .

The brass hanging back-walled Hanukah lamp consists of a row of eight oil containers and a back wall.

A row of eight round spouted oil containers is fastened to the lower side of the back wall. The architectural back wall is mounted over a horizontal inscripted bar. The back wall consists of a tripod urn supporting a vase with a torch, flanked by two rampant lions. The composition is framed by rocailles at each side. The back wall is topped by a dome decorated with a conch pattern and bears a hanging hole at the top. There is an inscription on the band that reads: כי נר מצוה ותורה אור !For the commandment is a lamp; and the Law is light!...(Prov. 6:23)

The object is identical to the Hanukkah lamp from the National Museum of Slovenia, Ljubljana (CJA object 33677).
