History/Provenance
The exact date of the establishment of the synagogue is known from the civil certificate from the REGISTRAR GENERAL dated 23rd January 1919 giving permission for the building at 269 Barking Road, Canning Town to be "used as a Place of Meeting for Religious Worship by a Congregation or Assembly of persons calling themselves Jews" under the name "Canning Town Synagogue." As seen in interior photographs, this certificate was permanently on display in the synagogue. We are grateful to Melvyn Leach for providing this information.
