The synagogue building was built between 1904 and 1907.
After WWII, returning survivors were unable to rebuild the heavily damaged synagogue building, and the building served other non-religious purposes. The building housed the printing press of Zenica Ironworks and in the 1960s it was used as a furniture store. Jewish Community of Yugoslavia reached an agreement with the city in 1968 to turn the building into a local museum.
