Summary and Remarks
History

On August 12, the chief of the rural district of Garliava reported to the Kaunas County governor that 285 Jews were living in the rural district. According to the report by Karl Jäger, the Jews from Garliava were executed between August 28 and September 2, 1941. A couple of weeks before the shooting (in mid-August), local police officers and white armbanders herded the Jews of Garliava and surrounding villages to the town’s synagogue. Local police officers and white armbanders forced the Jews from the synagogue to the site of the massacre. There were men, women, and children. The policemen and white armbanders surrounded the murder site and, group by group, led the Jews to the pit. First they killed the men. They were lined up near the ditch and shot in the back from a distance of a few meters.

A memorial was erected in the early 1990s. In 2023, it was completely renovated, see here.
