On September 1, 1941, Jieznas police and riflemen took prisoner all remaining Jews in the town, including men, women, children and the elderly. Jewish men were locked in the basement of the municipality building and the women and children were imprisoned in the synagogue. The next day, 5 officers and about 20 soldiers arrived in Jieznas. Jewish men (about 50) were taken to the killing site. The women and children in the synagogue were treated in the same way. The Jäger Report says 144 Jews were killed in Jieznas.
The monument was built in 1990.
