Who is Commemorated?

Jews of Kovno (Kaunas), Lithuania, who perished in the Holocaust. 

Description: 

The monument is located in the Western Alley of the cemetery, along with dozens of other Holocaust memorials built by Landsmannschaft organizations, survivors, and relatives. 

The memorial is a large stone geometric structure with a central recessed section framed by four protruding sections, creating a symmetrical indentation.

The monument bears Hebrew inscriptions that honor the memory of the community.One of the inscriptions indicates that the monument contains the ashes of the Jewish victims.

In the center, in Hebrew: 

לזכר

יהודי

קובנה

והסביבה

שנספו

בשואה

Translation: In memory/ of the Jews/ of Kovno/ and surroundings who perished/ in the Holocaust.

On the metal plaque, in Hebrew: 

כאן טמון עפר

הטבול בדם יקירינו

שנרצחו

בפורט התשיעי

השביעי והרביעי 

Translation: Here lies soil / soaked with the blood / of our loved ones / murdered in the Ninth, Seventh, and Fourth Forts.
