Obj. ID: 52101 Fosse Ardeatine Mausoleum Complex in Rome, Italy - The Monolith
Memorial Name
The Monolith
Description
The tombs of the victims are lined up together under a large unadorned white concrete roof structure, referred to as the monolith, that hovers over a stone side wall, built in the same manner as the entrance gate and the retaining walls of the caves. Narrow continuous horizontal between the side walls and roof allow natural light to filter into the space. There are 336 tombs: one is dedicated to the memory of all the victims of Nazi and Fascist massacres, while the others are numbered from 1 to 335, following the order in which the bodies were found. A metal book with inscribed bronze (?) pages lists the victims alphabetically and where their tombs are located. All the tombs are identical in size and shape, and each is inscribed with the name, occupation, and religion of the deceased, and many have photos on their covers
