Who is Commemorated?

Jews killed in the Holocaust in Europe; a plaque added later commemorates a Jewish soldier,  a native of Madanos killed in Israel

Description

This memorial is located in a small plaza, surrounded by hedges, within the cemetery. it takes the form of an obelisk made of white stone [possibly marble paneled], that sits on a tripartite base; a trapezoidal platform with walls of the same white stone and a top of a pink stone sits on a square platform of the same materials, which itself sits on a square platform of concrete.

Three plaques adorn the front of the memorial. The uppermost plaque has an inscription of a Magen David over matching inscriptions in Hebrew and Spanish, dedicating the monument to the Jewish victims of the holocaust. The middlemost plaque seems to have been added later and further dedicates the monument to David Volpin, a member of the community who died in the Negev in Israel. the bottommost plaque bears the date March 1949.

Middle Plaque:

La
Comunidad israelita de Médanos
en eterna recordación de su hijo natal
David Volpin (Q.E.P.D.)
caído en las estepas del Neguev
en Ein Haschloscha, Israel,
el día 26 de enero de 1951.

He aquí una historia

Translation: The Médanos Jewish community is in eternal remembrance of its native son David Volpin (RIP), who fell in the steppes of the Negev in Ein HaShlosha, Israel, on January 26, 1951. / Here is a story. / one day, [he] left the noble and generous land of San Martin on the impulse of an ideal. / and the brave soldier sheathed his victorious sword and became a shepherd-messenger of hope for an ancient people in search of justice and truth. / Only the weapon of treason cut short the life of the soldier and the pastor, but not that of hope.

Marzo 1948
