This is an early edition among the many editions printed of this book.
Giovanni Zuallardo (1541-1634) born in Hainaut, Belgium, accompanied the son of a nobleman to whom he was tutor on a pilgrimage to the Holy Land in 1586. This account of his 6 month travels in the Levant contains some of the earliest printed illustrations of buildings and and views of Palestine. Places visited include Venice, Italy, the Tremiti Islands, Southern Mediterranean, Zante, Cyprus, Crete, the surroundings of Bethlehem, Jaffa, Jerusalem and Tripoli. Many of the illustrations were copied by subsequent authors. "A traveller from the Low Countries, Zuallart visited the Holy Land in 1586. The judge, historian and Knight of the Order of the Holy Sepulchre was also a self-taught artist who produced a travel book full of romantic images of the exotic East. His drawings of biblical cities nestling in sand dunes and bathed in sunshine were so accurate and precise that they are still a key source for architectural historians today" London Library.
