History/Provenance

The Germans occupied Abal'tsy (Obol'tsy) on July 6-8, 1941 [Al'tman, 668]. On August 14 of the same year, a ghetto was established [Yad Vashem: Untold Stories].

The monument commemorates the events that occurred on June 5, 1942. On that day, the ghetto was liquidated, and the remaining Jews of Abal'tsy (Obol'tsy) were killed [Al'tman, 688]. After the war, their remains were reburied in the Jewish cemetery of Orsha, where the present monument stands. The original murder site remains unmarked [Yad Vashem: Untold Stories].
