Memorial to Telšiai (Telz) victims of the Holocaust in the Southern Tel Aviv (Holon) Cemetery, Israel

© Center for Jewish Art, Photographer: Levin, Vladimir, 2024

Memorial Name:

No official name.

Who is Commemorated?

The Jews of Telšiai (Telz), Lithuania, who perished in the Holocaust.

Description:

The monument is located in the Southeastern Alley of the cemetery, along with dozens of other Holocaust memorials built by Landsmannschaft organizations, survivors, and relatives.

The monument is a structure consisting of a light-colored tiled wall with dedicatory inscriptions and a wide black horizontal slab with a slanted top, standing on a platform before the wall.  The black plaque on the wall bears the depiction of the Great Beit Midrash and the Yeshiva in Telšiai, Lithuania.

In front of the monument, there were pillars with small structures for memorial candles—one pillar remains standing, while the others are broken.

The monument bears Hebrew inscriptions honoring the community's memory. The community name is emphasized through the use of a larger font size. The inscriptions indicate that the monument contains a scroll listing the names of the Jewish community's victims and their ashes.

Inscription:

On the wall, in Hebrew:

לזכר קדושי קהילת טלז ליטא

שנספו בשואה

כה אמר ה'

הנה אני פותח את קברותיכם

והעליתי אתכם מקברותיכם

עמי והבאתי אתכם

Translation: In memory of the martyrs of the Telz community, Lithuania / Who perished in the Holocaust // Thus says the Lord / Behold, I will open your graves / And raise you up from your graves / My people, and bring you to the land of Israel / Ezekiel 37.

On the black horizontal slab, in Hebrew:

ימי זכרון

כ' בתמוז

ו' באלול

ב' בטבת

Translation:  Memorial Days / 20 Tammuz / 6 Elul / 2 Tevet.

On a stone plaque, attached to the wall, on the right side, in Hebrew:

Translation: Ashes and Names / The Martyrs.
