Who is Commemorated?

The Jews of Kozienice (Kozhnitz), Poland, who perished in the Holocaust.

Description:

The monument is located in the Southeastern Alley of the cemetery, along with dozens of other Holocaust memorials built by Landsmannschaft organizations, survivors, and relatives.

The monument is a large, dark stone slab framed by a triangular structure, with a frieze and a pediment. It stands on a base and is enclosed by a metal fence with stylized cut-out silhouettes of raised hands. On the base, there is a small stone structure for a memorial candle and a bowl.

The monument bears Hebrew and Yiddish inscriptions honoring the community's memory. The community name is emphasized through the use of a larger font size.

On the triangular, pediment-like structure, in Hebrew:

עיר המגיד

Translation: The city of Maggid [reference to Yisroel Hopstein]

On the dark plaque in the center, in Hebrew and Yiddish:

זכור

פארגעסט נישט

Translation: Remember / Do not forget 

In Hebrew:

נזכור את

קדושי

קהילת

קוז'ניץ

והסביבה

שנספו בשואה

ביום א' דחוה"מ סוכות

תש"ב

 

יזגרם ואור נשמתם

יקוננו בלבנו לנצח

 

והעליתי אתכם מקברותיכם עמי

והבאתי אתכם אל אדמת ישראל

(יחזקאל) 

Translation: We will remember / The martyrs of / The Kozienice / Community / and surroundings / Who perished in the Holocaust / On the 1st day of Chol HaMoed Sukkot / 5702 / May their memory and the light of their souls / Be engraved in our hearts forever / I will bring you up from your graves, My people, / And I will bring you to the land of Israel (Ezekiel).

On the small stone structure, in Hebrew: 

נר ה' נשמת אדם 

Translation: The soul of man is the lamp of the Lord [Proverbs 20:27].

On the base, in Hebrew:

והעליתי אתכם מקברותיכם עמי

והבאתי אתכם אל אדמת ישראל

(יחזקאל) 

Translation: I will bring you up from your graves, My people, / And I will bring you to the land of Israel (Ezekiel).
