Memorial to Beregszász (Berehove) victims of the Holocaust in the Southern Tel Aviv (Holon) Cemetery, Israel, 1981

© Center for Jewish Art, Photographer: Levin, Vladimir, 2024

Memorial Name:

No official name.

Who is Commemorated?

The Jews of Beregszász, Hungary (today Berehove, Ukraine), who perished in the Holocaust.

Description:

The monument is located in the Southeastern Alley of the cemetery, along with dozens of other Holocaust memorials built by Landsmannschaft organizations, survivors, and relatives.

The monument is a large stone slab featuring a grey relief depicting the Great synagogue in Beregszász (the synagogue was reconstructed beyond recognition, see ID 14425). At the lower part of the slab, there is a dark plaque accompanied by two stone memorial candle holders. The slab is set on a dark base, encircled by short stone columns connected by a metal chain.

The monument bears Hebrew inscriptions honoring the community's memory. The community name is emphasized through the use of a larger font size. One of the inscriptions indicates that the monument contains the ashes of the Jews, who perished in the Holocaust.

Inscription:

On the large slab, in Hebrew:

על אלה

אני בוכיה

עיני עיני

יורדה מים

לזכר קדושי קהילת

Translation: For these, I weep / My eyes, my eyes / Flow with tears [Lamentations 1:16] / In memory of the martyrs / Of the Beregszász community / And its surroundings.

On the memorial candle holders, right and left, in Hebrew:
