Description
The memorial is located at the end of the large entrance foyer of the synagogue, set in a wood-paneled square niche next to the sanctuary entrance. The memorial consists of two parts. A centrally placed metal Magen David – made of two overlapping sheets of gilded metal dominates the niche. The star is made to appear battered, torn, and scarred. A red light is set behind the star so that it glows, as if on fire. This plays with the traditional form of the Ner Tamid (Eternal light).
Inscribed across the center of the star in Hebrew letters that appear burnt into the metal is the word “Zachor” (Remember). Beneath the star in large stylized Hebrew letters is a passage from Jeremiah 50:46, and below that in the English translation.
