Who is Commemorated?

The Jews of Yanov, Poland, (Yanov, Ukraine) who perished in the Holocaust.

Description: The monument is located in the Western Alley of the cemetery, among numerous Holocaust memorials established by Landsmannschaft organizations, survivors, and relatives. It consists of a tall, rectangular stone slab topped with a carved menorah, resting on a stepped base. On either side of the slab are two small stone boxes, with the left box now bearing a handwritten inscription. A lying slab is positioned on the base, and the entire structure is enclosed by a low metal fence with Star of David panels and connecting chains. All components of the monument—the main slab, lying slab, small sign on the fence, and the door of the box—are inscribed in Hebrew.

History/Provenance

Based on a photo of the memorial from the 1980s or 1990s, published in the Ghetto Fighters House archive, the original structure included two stone cube-shaped boxes, one on each side of the central slab. The left box, as inscribed, contained scrolls with the names of the martyrs. Today, this left box's original door has been replaced by a metal door with a handwritten Hebrew text indicating the same purpose. The right stone box no longer has a door and is empty.
