Who is Commemorated?

The Jews of Olkusz, Poland who perished in the Holocaust.

Description:

The monument is located in the Western Alley of the cemetery, along with dozens of other Holocaust memorials built by Landsmannschaft organizations, survivors, and relatives.

The monument is a white stone slab set on a stepped base. Two short stone pillars flank the slab on each side. On the base, there is a horizontal stone slab with a metal handle, concealing a niche with the ashes from Auschwitz (?). A metal menorah is placed on the right side of the base. The entire monument is surrounded by four short stone columns connected by a metal chain. At the back of the memorial, there is a metal door, concealing a niche with a scroll with names.

המצבה הזאת

ואפר הקדושים 

הטמון בקבר יהיו

לגלעד

לקדושי עירנו

אולקוש

שנרצחו בשואה

ע"י הנאצים וגרוריהם

תהא האבן הזאת

למזכרת נצח

לנו ולדורות הבאים

Translation: This monument / and the ashes of the martyrs / buried in this grave shall be / a memorial / to the martyrs of our city / Olkusz  / who were murdered in the Holocaust / by the Nazis and their collaborators / May this stone / be an eternal remembrance / for us and for future generations

On the metal door, at the back, in Hebrew: 

שמות הקדושים

Translation: Names of the martyrs.
