Bolechów (Bolekhiv) Victims Monument in the Southern Tel Aviv (Holon) Cemetery, Israel, 1990s (?)

© Center for Jewish Art, Photographer: Levin, Vladimir, December 2023

Memorial Name:

No official name

Who is Commemorated?

The Jews of Bolechów, Poland (today Bolekhiv, Ukraine), and the surroundings, perished in the Holocaust.

Description:

The monument is located in the Western Alley of the cemetery in Holon, along with dozens of other Holocaust monuments built by Landsmannschaft organizations, families, and survivors.

The monument is an upright rounded slab made of black stone set on the lying slab, square and surrounded by smaller stones. At the four corners of the monument, there are low pillars enclosing it.

The monument bears Hebrew inscriptions that honor the memory of the community. The community name is emphasized through the use of a larger font size. One of the inscriptions indicates that the monument contains the ashes of the Jewish victims.

The photograph of the 1990s shows that the back pillars had houses for memorial candles on top and the front left pillar had a stone bowl set on it [The Archive of Ghetto Fighters' House].

Inscriptions:

In Hebrew, on the upright slab, in large letters:

בולחוב והסביבה

Translation: Bolechów and the surroundings

In Hebrew, on the lying marker:

המצבה הוקמה לזכר חללי השואה

Translation: The monument was built in memory of the Holocaust victims /of the community of Bolechów and its surroundings/ who were destroyed by the Nazis and their helpers during World War II /in the years 1941-1943/ may God avenge their blood /The destruction of the community on the 24th of Av, 1943 /Earth, earth, do not cover their blood /and let there be no place for their cry [Job 16:18]
